Eric Weddle Has Made His Case To Start

Someone asked Coach Turner if Eric Weddle’s performance against the Niners put an exclamation point at the end of his preseason. Rather than just single Weddle out in that instance, Coach Turner instead chose to praise many of his young players who have shown incredible promise throughout training camp and the preseason.

If Coach doesn’t want to say it, then I’ll say it for him: Eric Weddle should be the favorite to win the starting Free Safety job. There is absolutely no reason - none - Weddle should not be starting week one against Chicago.

Among the rookie class, Weddle has made the most plays, has practiced at a high level on a daily basis, and has amassed the most impressive stat line in the preseason. It’s true that Clinton Hart has improved his play this year, but Weddle has been as good, if not better across the board:

In four preseason games in 2007:

Eric Weddle
15 Tackles, 5 Passes Defended, 3 Interceptions

Clinton Hart
6 Tackles, 3 Passes Defended, 2 Interceptions

Certainly Weddle has played more snaps this preseason than has Hart, but Weddle in turn has maximized his opportunity to be on the field. Weddle has impressed the coaches with his focus and determination, and has earned the respect of his teammates for his big-plays and eagerness to learn.

According to the recent poll here at BoltHype, the majority of fans feel Weddle has earned the right to start opposite Marlon McCree. I wholeheartedly agree with that majority and say the Weddle era starts now and continues for many, many years.

Are you kidding me? Please look at who Eric Weddle made the interceptions against. He is pretty good against second teams of opponents. Hart has been playing against other team's starters.

Guess u want Steve Gregory and Scott Chandler to start too. I like the kid but he should not be the starter right now.
