Since the organization turned itself around in 2004, the Chargers have complied an impressive 46-18 regular season record. The only teams with better regular season records over the past four years are the Indianapolis Colts (51-13) and the New England Patriots (52-12).
This year, the second under Head Coach Norv Turner, the Chargers will be looking to improve across the board. The Bolts had a shaky start last season so you gotta figure they'd like to start fast in 2008.
Lets have a look at the Chargers schedule and try to predict their win/loss record for the '08 season:
Sept 7 CAROLINA 1:15 pm (This win is sewed up)
Sept 14 @ Denver 1:15 pm (Another win)
Sept 22 NY JETS 5:30 pm (Mark up a win)
Sept 28 @ Oakland 1:05 pm (Guaranteed win)
Oct 5 @ Miami 10:00 am (This could actually be a tough game)
Oct 12 NEW ENGLAND 5:15 pm (Too tough to call)
Oct 19 @ Buffalo 10:00 am (Chargers play well in Buffalo)
Oct 26 @ New Orleans 10:00 am (London) (Super Bowl type game...it'll be tough)
Nov 2 BYE (Chargers will need this bye week badly)
Nov 9 KANSAS CITY 1:15 pm (Slam dunk win)
Nov 16 @ Pittsburgh 1:15 pm (Ouch)
Nov 23 INDIANAPOLIS 5:15 pm (Chargers match up too well...but still not an easy win)
Nov 30 ATLANTA 1:05 pm (Lock)
Dec 4 OAKLAND 5:15 pm (Another lock)
Dec 14 @ Kansas City 10:00 am (Hmmm...this one could be rough)
Dec 21 @ Tampa Bay 5:15 pm (Chargers will have to travel far for this one)
Dec 28 DENVER 1:15 pm (Lets close out the season with a win)
So the way I see it, there are seven guaranteed wins on this schedule - by that I mean could play the second stringers all year long and still win seven games. Of course, there are also about nine tough games the Chargers will have to play. If you figure the Chargers make out on the winning end more often than not in those games, then that gives you another five wins. So I think a 12-4 record is very realistic.
12-4 means the Chargers will have to play some playoff games to get to the big dance. They probably wont have the luxury of first round byes and such. But no matter; ask General Manager AJ Smith and he'll tell you "just get in the tournament, and make some noise once you get there."
So my prediction for the year? 12-4 regular season, AFC West Champions, third seed in the AFC, Super Bowl XLIII Champions! What your prediction? Does anyone want to go on record with a prediction? Let's have it!
