With all but one the team's draft picks signed, the attention turns to Chargers rookie cornerback Antonie Cason. Cason, the favorite among fans to earn the nickelback job, was expected to sign in time to report to training camp. But with some sangs in the contract negations, it appears Cason hold out from the team's mandatory sessions:"I don't know what the plan is. I'm planning on being there, but if things don't work out, it's out of my hands. I'm too young to be stressed. The way I see it, it's going to happen. There's no need to stress over it. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing to prepare myself for the upcoming season." - Antoine Cason
Problems between Cason and the Chargers would represent somewhat of a departure from what has typically been quiet offseasons as of late in San Diego. As mentioned, the nickelback job was widely viewed among fans as Cason's to lose. But if Cason misses a significant amount of time, it could prove to be an opportunity for a guy like Paul Oliver... who is still searching for his niche on the team. Oliver has split time at both cornerback and safety but he is versatile enough to play both positions.
We'll be monitoring developments closely; question marks in the secondary continue to spike the interest of us fans as we approach yet another season with a rotating set of defensive backs.
