Lets pick up Andre smith if available for the 1st choice. Than work on our D-fence. Lets also address our safety issue by signing a veteran like Jermaine Phillips or Sean Smith. Preferably Phillips since he comes from a strong defensive team like the Bucs. He would automatically add improvement to our secondary and replace the weak neck roll C. Hart. Also, Phillips can be a leader for up and coming Eric Weddle. We also need to address ILB to help shut down the run and blitz the QB. Maualuga would be a great fit, but if Andre smith is available would be a better suit for the team. Beef up the O-Line and we will have great improvement on our running and passing game. maualuga = seau

dont see them waiting til RD 7 to take a RB......and the comp picks will be more like a 3rd and a 4th....that being said.....either at 16 or 78 they will take a RB....if its 16 it will be Knowshon Moreno..if its 78 it will be Rashad Jennings (Liberty)or Andre Brown (NC State)

fuck!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said... Mar 5, 2009, 12:02:00 PM

No I think by the time the Chargers are up on the board that all the elite OT's will be gone, take Maualuga! That dude is...............NASTY!

Anonymous said... Mar 5, 2009, 9:21:00 PM

we need to trade for a second round pick so after the chargers draft Mauluga we can get an o-line man or safety.

Anonymous said... Mar 8, 2009, 10:57:00 PM

i think we should use our draft picks on ILB, OT, DT, and a RB.

Rey Maulaga would be awesome to have. He'd help a lot in stopping the run and bringing more fire and energy to our defense. Like someone said above, maulaga = seau.

We really do need an offensive tackle. Someone on the right side because Jeromey Clary is HORRIBLE. He has at least one false start a game and he can't block my grandma to save Philip Rivers's life.

We sure do need a safety, a hard hitting safety. Preferably a hard-hitting veteran through free agency. It would've been nice to get Jermaine Phillips or Roy WIlliams. Oh well. But from comments I've seen in other forums, if Sean Jones or Dawan Landry are available, they'd be nice to bring in.

MAUALUGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YAAAA

Anonymous said... Mar 18, 2009, 4:07:00 PM

I say trade the first pick for two second round picks from either the Patriots or Browns. Chargers need the money that a first rounder would demand to re-sign Rivers and Gates next year.

comp picks have been announced and here is what the Charger have:
Chargers 2009 NFL Draft Picks
Round Pick Player
Round 1 16 TBD
Round 2 47 Traded to New England
Round 3 78 TBD
Round 4 109 TBD
Round 4 133 Projected Compensatory
Round 4 134 Projected Compensatory
Round 5 140 TBD
Round 6 176 TBD
Round 7 207 TBD

That the Chargers only got a 4th for Turner supposedly has to do with contract monies but the Steelers getting a fifth rounder for Faneca belies that logic.

I don't see AJ not doing a deal for a second round pick and who is dealt and what picks are lost for a second rounder is the 'kicker' for any pick/player combo except the first rounder.
I'll bet the selection is the best player available that is thier top choice per 'needs' perspective; which I see as DE/OLB,OT/G,S,RB,DT.
Of course if Sproles is dealt as part of the package for a secound round pick, then RB jumps to the top.

Rob Zepeda said... Mar 23, 2009, 9:15:00 PM

Thanks aflcharger! I've updated the table. Too bad we couldn't get that third rounder for Turner...

Anonymous said... Mar 24, 2009, 12:05:00 PM

the chargers should pick up Knowshon Moreno and have him learn from lt so they have a good rb in 2 years to take some load off of sproles but get Rey Maualuga in the first

Arcadio said... Mar 24, 2009, 6:43:00 PM

everybody we need to make aj pick someone worthy of the chargers 16th pick, PICK Maualuga!!!!!!
Maualuga Maualuga Maualuga Maualuga Maualuga Maualuga
post this all over the website people please if u think our D needs help which it undeniably does

Anonymous said... Apr 14, 2009, 9:24:00 PM

if AJ smith doesnt pick Ray Mauluga in the first round, if he is still available, he"s a damn fool. Obviously our offense isnt the problem according to last year so obtaining solid OT coud wait till the later rounds. Plus we must compensate for loosing Igor so dont rule out Tyson Jacson from LSU. But I think charger fans have been waiting for ILB that could fill seau's shoes. how exciting would that be to see shawn merriman and ray mauluga on the same defense? I think the chargers have enough talant but lack leadership. I say trade late round pick in 2009 and 2010 to get a veteran safety for the 2009 season. we need someone that can fill rodney harrisons shoes and im afraid we havent seen that with our current depth and safety. But ultimately i say stack the defense in the early rounds and then im sure AJ could still find some good picks for offense in the late rounds. anyone disagree?

Rob Zepeda said... Apr 14, 2009, 9:29:00 PM

I love the idea about trading for a veteran safety.

Anonymous said... Apr 15, 2009, 6:57:00 PM

I seriously agree on the whole Maualuga and leadership thing. The man is a winner and a beast. He will make our defence exciting alongside Merriman and those guys. Wow imagine having him on our D, I would actually have confidence in stopping teams from getting a first down over and over again. We would be a dominant team if we focus on drafting Maualuga and pure defence (DE, SS, OLB). Defence wins championships, our offence is fine the way it is.

Anonymous said... Apr 17, 2009, 12:23:00 PM

Get Ray From USC, You can find a DE in the 4th round, that is the easiest position to find a player anyways. Go Chargers, Go Trojans!

Anonymous said... Apr 26, 2009, 11:20:00 AM

we should draft Quan Cosby. it would add another playmaker to our offense.

Anonymous said... Apr 26, 2009, 10:33:00 PM

i am glad they decided to go for a O-line 1st because rivers can not scramble to save his life.

Anonymous said... Apr 28, 2009, 4:22:00 AM

Larry English is a beast! he will definately bring up the pressure on the outside, opening up holes for our LBs to blitz on the inside. He never gives up and keeps attacking. whenever theres a tackle youll be sure to see #51 there!
Gartrell Johnson looks pretty good too. not the biggest or fastest guy but a great powerback, fights for every inch and is dangerous 1 on 1. very capable of the things LT n Sprolles can do with catching, gaining yards, and breaking out for huge plays
I am kind of upset with all the trades n great pik ups by other teams. But i do have faith in our choices. we got virtually all the positions we needed in the 09 draft, but we didnt have many chances at good early picks.

Chargers 10-6 < wishful thinking
Chiefs 8-8 < biggest threat.
Raiders 7-9 < giving them a lil too much credit? Al Davis is an idiot. Raider fans.. u might win a div. when he dies in like 5 years.
Broncos 6-10 < even though i hate him, ortan is NO where near cutler. so say byebye to your passing game broncos.

Anonymous said... Apr 29, 2009, 11:55:00 AM

Larry English was a great pick up because he can play DE and OLB very versatile and a beast that can bring the pressure! Beside we did not sign our silent pressure man IIIIGOR Olshansky and that was a huge mistake! Although Rey Mauluga or any of the USC LB core would have been great. but they could only play one position.

Anonymous said... May 1, 2009, 7:20:00 AM

Yeah man I love hawaii I have relitatives there and yes english is a beast who dosent give up on plays I just hope everything falls into place and we can take the division get through the playoffs and finally win a superbowl were the only team in the the afc west without a superbowl title hopefully this year they can change that please chargers go all the way for ur fans and the city of san diego.

Considering the Chargers are maybe the only team you consistently hear has "tons of depth" and "very few needs" from every so-called NFL expert -- I think AJ Smith more than deserves the benefit of the doubt re: this draft. That said -- oh yeah winning three AFC West titles in a row also should buy the guy a break but maybe that's just me...btw -- I'm a Pac-10 fanatic and can promise you that as long as Ellison is healthy -- he'll not only make the team but soon get on the field and just like at SC -- only an injury will bring him off. This guy hits like a monster but he's also a highly intelligent player...pete carroll said it was like having a coach on the field when he played...many SC beat writers named Ellision the best player on the that now famous defense...so look out for pick number 6 -- worst case he goes IR or practice squad and heals up for 2010...I also think drafting English was a good call -- although I would've liked to see Rey M. or the tackle from Mississippi Oher...but I'm just a fan -- AJ's got the gig and he does it damn well...it wasn't all that long ago that the Chargers made a habit of staying away from D-1 programs regardless of the round and finished with one of the worst records in the league year after year...remember those days? I do -- because SC was just as awful then too! I have a hard time seeing the Chargers not winning the Division this year but wouldn't count out the Broncos just yet...also Matt Cassell's a helluva a QB (or could it be the system he was in?) -- can;'t wait to find out....

I like the players drafted.
I just don't like where they are drafted at.
Did you guys see article on Nawrocki's mock draft results? Here's the link: http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Day/2009/mockresults.htm
Also, check out his top 100 at this link: http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Extras/2009/top100_042409.htm
I've been reading Nawrocki for years (and Joel before he passed away), and he consistently ranks the bulk of the players in the right "clusters" (to use A.J.'s words). He is very accurate in predicting where teams are going to pick players.

What bugs me about the last few drafts is that A.J. seems to choose players higher than what they "could" have been picked at, so he is missing opportunity to trade down and get more picks.
You have to know your enemy......and predict what they will do.
A.J., you claim to admire the Patriot way.....check out how they used trades to pick up extra picks in this draft and next year's draft!

Nawrocki ranked English at #55 overall, predicted he'd be drafted at #37. But, A.J. chooses him at #16. We'll never know, but by Nawrocki's rating the Chargers could have traded down and got English later (maybe top of 2nd) and another pick.....even if it was a fifth or sixth! Take that fifth or sixth and trade it for a fourth or fifth next year! The point is this...don't take a guy significantly higher than what other teams have him ranked at!

In 2008, Nawrocki ranked Cason # 83, and predicted he'd be picked at #68. A.J. chooses him at bottom of first. And, Nawrocki ranked Hester at #130, and did not predict he would be picked in the top 100...and he gets picked at the top of the third.

Everyone seems to give A.J. a pass because he signed undrafted free agents like Gates and Dielman. But before you do....answer this question? What was the biggest "reach" in the first round of this year's draft? A lot of people will say Oakland picking Heyward-Bay at #7.....but Nawrocki had him ranked at #17 overall, and predicted he would be picked at #14. Compare that to English at #16 overall, with a "Nawrocki" ranking of #55, and a pick prediction of #37.
