Prospects On The Chargers Radar - 2009

The 2009 Senior Bowl Week is underway in Mobile, Alabama. The week of practices leading up to the game is arguably more important than the contest itself. Teams can conduct one-one-one interviews with some of the best seniors in the country, and will be diligently watching and evaluating how the player acts both on and off the field.

The San Diego Chargers have reportedly been spotted talking with the following players:

Zack Follet, LB (Cal) - 6'1" 231lbs
Carries a draft grade of: mid-round

Notes: Plays an awful lot like Shawne Merriman. Great blitzer, non-stop motor. Can make plays on the ball. A bit under-sized. Special-teamer type who will compete for playing time:

Zack Follet 2007 Highlights

Brooks Foster, WR (North Carolina) - 6'3" 205lbs
Carries a draft grade of: mid-round

Notes: Smooth athlete that looks the part. Was part of a talented wide receiver core at UNC so opportunities were limited. Speedy and quick, but still raw. Do the Chargers view him as a punt/kick returner?

Peria Jerry, DT (Ole Miss) - 6'2" 290lbs
Carries a draft grade of: first round

Notes: Very disruptive player. Almost impossible to block and made a ton of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Played against top competition. Can't really get much bigger - frame appears to be maxed out. Doesn't seem like a prototype fit for a 3-4 defense.

Robert Ayers, DE (Tennessee) - 6'3" 270lbs
Carries a draft grade of: mid-round

Notes: Intimidating defender who delivers ferocious hits. Played defensive end in a tough conference but will likely move to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Luckily, he's play linebacker before.

Pat White, QB (West Virgina) - 6'0" 190lbs
Carries a draft grade of: late round/free agent

Notes: Played Quarterback in college, where he holds the NCAA record for rushing yards by a QB. A great college player and exciting to watch, he simply lacks the tools to play QB in the NFL. He'll have to play wide receiver or maybe running back at the next level.

Shawn Nelson, TE (Southern Miss) - 6'5" 240lbs
Carries a draft grade of: mid-round

Notes: This pass catching tight end is a physical specimen who'll need to develop his overall game, especially in terms of blocking. Labeled as a wide receiver in a tight end's body. Fast for his size, he'll be a match-up nightmare in the right situation.

Shawn Nelson

Alex Magee, DT (Purdue) - 6'4" 295lbs

Carries a draft grade of: mid-round

Notes: Played Defensive Tackle in college, but was moved to Defensive End as a Senior. Responded well, making a career best 9.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Long, well-built, and athletic, Magee's stock is on the rise.

Louis Delmas, S (Western Michigan) - 5'11" 200lbs
Carries a draft grade of: second round

Notes: Delmas is a heat seeking missile, and draws favorable comparisons to Bob Sanders. Delmas flies to the ball and delivers big hits. He has good speed and range, and can probably play either safety position. With his stock rising, Delmas will be one of the first safeties off the board on draft day.

Excellent information. Thanks so much. I'm kind of surprised that their draft efforts appear to be focused so much on offense. I would expect to see more DE and DB candidates in the mix.

I agree sdjase, down the stretch it was our defense that let us down more than our offense. I wouldn't stop at DE and DB's either...

I think we need to draft some OL and a good RB. We could probably fix our defense through free agency by releasing LT and gaining some cap space.

1. Chris Wells RB Ohio State (plays like brandon jacobs mixed with Derrick Ward) It could be a great 1-2 punch along with Darren Sproles

Releasing LT would give us enough cap room to sign a top defensive free agent like Julius Peppers, BUT if that doesn't happen there is always Tank Johnson and Chris Canty

Either one of those DL and a veteran Strong Safety like Mike Brown or Dawan Landry would fill in all the holes in the defense

THEN focus on the Offensive Line in the Draft

;)

Can people please, please, please stop mentioning Peppers. He is NOT coming to San Diego. Enough. All the draft info here is great. It'll be interesting to see if the Bolts do take any of these players in the draft.

the chargers need an mlb they dont need a dt we have williams so wait another year or two before you start worrying about that position.

I would like to see the Bolts to get Ayers and Delmas.... they dont need pat white or any of these other guys. Ayers and Delmas would improve our defense.

I was just reading this article and it all made sense until I read the comment on WV QB Pat White. If you think White lacks the tools to be an NFL QB then you probably thought Ryan Leaf was a great pick. You need to go to school on the current trends in the NFL.....Remember what he looks like because you won't get but a glance as he blows by the Chargers D in someone's version of the Wildcat
