There is no doubt that Matt Stafford and his cannon of an arm is the best pro prospect in the 2009 NFL Draft class. He'll likely go number one overall to the Detroit Lions who desperately need a franchise quarterback. Conversely, the San Diego Chargers already have their elite signal caller and will likely not even consider drafting a QB in the first round. In fact, the only positions the Chargers would consider drafting with the 16th overall pick are Offensive Tackle, Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, Linebacker, Wide Receiver, Defensive Back, and Running Back. With that in mind, we've ranked the top 20 overall players who we think would be excellent fits for the San Diego Chargers:
01. OT Jason Smith
Smith has emerged as the draft's best lineman, displaying excellent athleticism, attitude, and work ethic. A true 5-star prospect.
02. LB Aaron Curry
The Bolts desperately need another impact linebacker and Curry is a playmaker on defense.
03. OT Eugene Monroe
The definition of an elite left tackle; Monroe would pair with Marcus McNeil as bookends to the Chargers offensive line.
04. WR Michael Crabtree
Crabtree is arguably the best pro prospect in the entire draft. Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson will be free agents in 2010.
05. DB Malcolm Jenkins
Jenkins reminds many people of Quentin Jammer; he can play both cornerback or safety.
06. LB Rey Maualuga
Impact linebacker who can change the game with his playmaking abilities; the next Junior Seau?
07. OT Michael Oher
Talented but flakey at times, Oher could turn into an excellent right tackle for the Bolts.
08. DT BJ Raji
Dominant defensive tackle with excellent pass rushing abilities.
09. OT Andre Smith
Absolute mauler in the run game, but recent character concerns have dropped his stock.
10. RB Chris Wells
A powerful and bruising running back, Wells could be the "thunder" to LT's "lightning."
11. LB Brian Orakpo
Supreme pass rusher who would offer the team some protection if/when Merriman leaves.
12. DB Louis Delmas
Playmaking safety who flies to the ball. Would add aggressiveness and intimidation to the secondary.
13. LB Everette Brown
Brown terrorized the vaunted ACC's offensive linemen for years.
14. LB Larry English
An absolute terror off the edge who is skyrocketing up draft boards.
15. WR Jeremy Maclin
Receiver slash return man who has home-run speed and is incredible after the catch.
16. OT Eben Britton
Very athletic for his size, Britton has all the tools to play tackle in the pros.
17. LB Brian Cushing
Freakish athlete who could play any of the linebacker positions for the Bolts.
18. RB Knowshon Moreno
Moreno is a well-rounded running back prospect who could be a dynamic weapon in Norv Turner's offense.
19. DE Tyson Jackson
Perhaps the best 3-4 defensive end prospect in the draft, Jackson could fill Olshanksy's void.
20. TE Brandon Pettigrew
The Chargers have almost no depth at tight end and Brandon Manumaleuna is playing his last season in San Diego.
