Oher could solidfy the O-line and LT will Go for 1,420 yards next season..

Offense should still be solid this season. Losing Igor and Jamal getting grayer makes DE T Jackson a higher needed pick. Great pass rush makes any secondary look awesome.

Based on what AJ said a while back, it will be an OT. Clary needs to be challenged. Oher would be that challenger. My guess is that we'll trade up at #2 for a DT

I chose Jackson because we need a future replacement for Jamal (if he can get bigger) and because - like the age old mantra - DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!

The Chargers need more help on defense and will use the 16th pick on Tyson Jackson. They could pick up an OT in later rounds since they do not need a left tackle. Also, AJ Smith has never selected an offensive lineman in the 1st round.

Seriously Tyson Jackson is a 3-4 DE not a NT. He would be a replacement for Olshansky not Williams. Scouting reports tout Jackson as a good run-stopper. The Chargers could definitely use improvement in this area. Robert Ayers could be another DE who would fit but 16th is too early for him. I would be happy with an elite OT at 16 or a defensive playmaker like Maualuga. Michael Jenkins at safety is also an interesting prospect.

Malcolm Jenkins that is

Oher on the board at 16; that's easy

I SAY NO TO TYSON JACKSON, Either we take a solid OL with the 16th or wait till later round to take one. We can also look at taking Maualuga or Jenkins w/16th pick and pick up someone like Fili Moala possibly in the 3rd round to take over for Igor. Moala can start at DE and can be menacing. He can slowly move to NT to take over for Jamal unless he's a beast at DE and we are able to get a true NT in next years draft. I would love to get REY or JENKINS in the 1st. 808BOLTFAN

The Bolts lack a hard hitter on D. Maualuga would give us the attitude that our defense has been lacking.

Maualuga is a beast! Draft him. We need a good linebacker to help out the front seven.

T. Jackson is a bust, everyone say's he's got the experience because he played against great offensive linemen, but he didn't stand out or was he impressive against those great linemen. Maualuga is the pick, we need another tone setter on defense. We need more aggressive, smash mouth players. Only Merriman and Jammer play aggressive. Maualuga will give us that stype of player in the middle. I like Cooper, but I think Burnett and Rey will be better suited together for the Chargers. Cooper can't tackle. 808BOLTFAN

Why not make our offense freaky and impossible to stop - Percy Harvin - WOW

Anonymous said... Apr 8, 2009, 10:51:00 PM

I agree that we need tougher defensive players like Jammer, Williams, Merriman, and Cooper. Dobbins and Siler are great in goal line defense. Weddle is a solid tackler but certainly not menacing; Cro...still soft even though he has become somewhat more physical from time to time; Castillo injury prone; Phillips significantly less effective without Merriman on the other side...definitely a hard nose line backer or a hardhitting safety would toughen up the defense. As much as i love the idea of another playmaker on offense, we just dont need one. Norv and Rivers simply need to spread the ball around. I like the idea more of getting Legedu more involved. If Chandler can stay healthy he can begin to pay dividends as well with his size and soft hands.

1. R. Maualuga (you can't pass up on him if he is there)
2. M. Oher (would solidify our right side of the O-line)
3. T. Jackson (replace Igor)
4. M. Jenkins (could play FS)
5. C. Wells (wow)

Who we shouldn't pick:

Moreno/Wells - RB is a need as we look to the future, but NOT a 1st round need. AJ, I repeat NOT a 1st round need. Perhaps a Shonn Greene or Javon Ringer in the 3rd round.

Delmas: would be a real reach (he may not even go in the first round), and besides, we need help at SS not FS.

Hood: DE is more of a need than DT (or NT, in our case), but if we did need a DT, we'd be looking at Peria Jerry, not reaching for Ziggy Hood

Cushing: Unless Merriman wasn't coming back, the more pressing need is at ILB, NOT OLB.

Who we'd love, but will be off the board:

Malcolm Jenkins - will go no later than 15 to the Texans and as early 8 to the Jags (if they're not somehow in the Sanchez mix). Move Weddle to SS and let Wilks and his assistants determine the best way to fill FS and CB with Cromartie, Cason, and Jenkins.

Andre Smith - should go 10th to the 49ers (again, if they are not in the Sanchez sweepstakes)

Tyson Jackson - is the best combination of best player available and most pressing need for us, but Denver is switching to the 3-4 and will need a 5-technique DE. I think the Donkeys steal him from us.

Who we will get:

I think it is between Michael Oher and Rey Maualuga with the 16th pick in the draft (i.e. if we don't trade down). Although I think this game is won in the trenches, I think that the numbers bear out that we need help on the defense side of the ball more than on the offensive side. Plus, the front office's posturing towards Clary and Forney during the offseason leads me to believe the will go with what they have on the right side of the OL and attempt to build depth in the later rounds.

That means: "With the 16 pick the San Diego Chargers select Rey Maualuga linebacker USC."

Poster above (Jackson best choice, will be gone, Maualuga or Oher next-best) is bang on. But I think they trade down. In addition to their own 1st-rounder at #1, Philly has 28 and 52; that's worth just a hair more than #16, and Philly has been collecting 5th rounders. New England has 3 2nd round picks, including ours (#47) and KC's (#34): together, those are a perfect deal for #16. The Pats' own 1st plus 2nd is probably worth SD's 1st and 4th, which might also be an option, as SD has two comp 4ths. All of these deals would benefit both teams. I could also see deals with Miami, Indy and Tennessee.

They could also deal Chambers. With Jackson, Floyd, Naanee and Davis, a 2nd rounder from Tennessee would potentially do us a lot of good. Heck, if we can work out a deal to extend him, we might be able to get a second-rounder for him from Jacksonville (failing that, we can shop him back to Miami... maybe Tampa).

Oops: Somehow I typed "#21" and got "#1". Yes, I know Philly doesn't pick first.

Anonymous said... Apr 14, 2009, 7:35:00 PM

Rey Maualuga will do it at 16. I don't see why you would want to trade down if he will be available. Sure, we need a SS, DE, and DT but that COULD HAVE been addressed during the free agency. I think we have pretty good depth though and can TRADE a WR for a 2nd rounder. (Osgood, Floyd, or Chambers)

Every since Donnie Edwards and Randall Godfrey have been gone teams have been alble to run at will on the Chargers defense. This team needs some one with a nasty demeaner in the middle and that person is Rey Maualuga.Team him up with Merriman , Phillips, Cooper, and Burnett and watch this defense go to the next level.

Steve said... Apr 19, 2009, 5:20:00 PM

Take Tyson Jackson. We don't need a RB and we'll find a RT later on. We already have a new MLB we got from Dallas and Maualuga has some personality traits AJ may not like anyway. Jackson will help clog up running lanes and swallow up blockers for Merriman.

I dont think its safe to assume that Oher, Jackson, or even Maualuga will be sitting there at 16. I see Oher going to the Bills at 11, and Jackson to the Broncos at 12. Now that the Jags have Holt, I could totally picture them trading down with Washington (so Wash can snag Sanchez) and taking Maualuga at 13. Although its very reasonable to expect one of these 3 to fall to them, I think SD will need to trade up or down do get a good value.

Hmmm... Buffalo has 28 and 42, right? That's 1140 pts, by memory. SD has #16, which is 1000. Perhaps Buffalo would benefit from picking both Oher and an OLB before any other AFCE team gets a crack (and both Miami and NE should be thinking LB...). That's maybe worth 140 points to Buffalo. SD has a spare 4th to sweeten the pot (Buf would then have 3 4th rounders).

New England might also be a good option. NE has 34 and 47, which is a fair swap for 16. Miami, Baltimore, Atlanta, Detroit and Tampa also have 1st/2nd (or 1st/3rd for Detroit) combos of similar value.
