Chargers Send 5 To Pro Bowl; Another 5 Selected As Alternates

The 2009 NFL Pro Bowl roster selections have been revealed, and the San Diego Chargers have five players named to the AFC squad, with another five named as alternates. Interestingly enough, not a single Chargers player was named as a starter, and those selected as alternates might surprise you.

Antonio Gates, Tight End
Nate Kaeding, Placekicker
Kassim Osgood, Special Teamer
Philip Rivers, Quarterback

CHARGERS SELECTED TO THE AFC PRO BOWL ROSTER AS ALTERNATES

Antonio Cromartie, Cornerback
Darren Sproles, Kick Returner
Marcus McNeill, Tackle
Vincent Jackson, Wide Receiver

YOUR TAKE

We knew it'd be hard for Vincent Jackson to make the team with so many good Receivers in the AFC, but Wes Welker over VJ? Really? As long as Shane Lechler is in the conference, it'll be impossible for Mike Scifres to earn a starting bid, which is a shame. Anyone else find it interesting that Antonio Cromartie makes all these Pro Bowls, yet Quentin Jammer has never even come close to making a Pro Bowl squad? At least Rivers earned his rightful place among Manning and Brady as one of the elite QB's in the AFC. What's your take on the selections?

Vincent Jackson is the most UNDERRATED WR in the NFL, as stated by many of the sports analyst on ESPN and NFL Network, CBS and NBC. Jackson has had an outstanding season with the Chargers. And Mike Scifres is THE BEST Punter in the NFL. But that's alright, because when we go to the Super Bowl, they would have to sit out from participating in the Pro Bowl anyways =)

I am upset that Mike Scifres did not make the Pro Bowl - even the gameday announcers commend him on his unparalleled ability to kick it within the 5. At least Nate Kaeding made it. He's soooo underrated. I'm also pretty upset that Shaun Phillips has never made it to the Pro Bowl. He's forced so many fumbles this season!!! Best team record!!! What the hell. Fans vote on their sucky teams based on BLIND favoritism, NOT talent. As Phillips tweeted, if the SD Chargers have the 2nd best record in the AFC, why did they only send 5 players to the Pro Bowl? Whatever. I agree with the comment above, though I don't want to jinx it...going to the PB won't mean a thing if we go to the...you know. Hehe.

Antonio Cromartie as an alternate in the Pro Bowl?!? That's hilarious! I can't believe what I'm seeing. Are we voting on the 2007 season again? This champagne-chucking chump is the biggest Pretender here since Ryan Leaf. It's absolutely *DISGUSTING* that a truly deserving player (like Quentin Jammer) is left off the roster so this "baby-daddy" dipsh*t can stand around and pose while others play tackle. Once again, football is a team game that's almost impossible to fairly compare individuals in, and the Pro Bowl pickers whiffing on the ultra-capable Vincent Jackson or Mike Scifres (or even Jacob Hester on ST coverage!) just proves it.
Antonio Cromartie in the Pro Bowl..., pul-leeze. Jeez, I laughed so hard I almost blew some of my beer out of my nose. Hilarious!
Go BOLTS!!! - And don't forget to vote for Amanda, every day!

BTW, when I wrote "whiffing" in the Pro Bowl voting in regard to Jackson and Scifres, I meant them not being voted in as FIRST teamers, not as "alternates". Check out the average yards-per-catch and the overall punting skills. It's obvious NObody in the NFL is better than our two guys, clearly.
The only ways for our Bolts to get any attention or justice is to not only win the damn Super Bowl, but win by more than 31 points and hold the other team to a shutout; not to mention handling the halftime show themselves too. Jeez.
Go BOLTS!!!

Scifres is not just an alternate, he and VJ are both 3rd alternates.

I am actually glad that less guys made the pro bowl. I remember what happened last time what happened when we had almost two dozen....

why do we even care about this stupid game that only tires our guys for the big show has there ever been a time when we actually agreed on all the picks? the voting is a joke the game is a joke and whoever is going to play us is going to be a joke really? GO BOLTS!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of Pro Bowl *JOKES*, I just found out a "Pro Bowl" definition detail that I'd somehow missed all these years; that is that those invited as "alternates" (i.e. most of the Chargers selected) will not "officially" BE Pro Bowlers UNLESS THEY ATTEND THE EVENT!? How weird is THAT, especially considering they are now scheduling the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl??? Can this be right?
It seems incredible, in every sense of the word.
Go BOLTS!!!

Looking forward to 2010 an what the chargers will do with 23 contracts up?

Well, the uncapped year may help....and I have a stange suspicion that AJ Smith was all over that when he signed free agents and made trades. On top of that the Bolts have key players who will end up being Restricted Free Agents.

Potential Restricted free agents will be:
Vincent Jackson
Malcolm Floyd
Marcus McNeill
Darren Sproles
Shawne Merriman
Jeromey Clary
Charlie Whitehurst

Pickups:
Travis Johnson
Antonio Garay
Marques Harris
Eric Ghiacuic

Exclusive Rights FA's
Antwan Applewhite
Mike Tolbert
Ogemdi Nwagbuo
James Holt

Questions:
Brandon Manumaleuna
Dante Hughes
Ian Scott
Kris Wilson
Alfonso Boone
Dennis Norman

Out:
John Runyan (retiring)

And on top of that will Jamal Williams be back in 2010 with his $5 million contract???...???

Believe it or not the Bolts have the upper hand and if we lose players we will get great draft picks. Good scenario in the short run.

@Melissa: you are absolutely right, Vincent Jackson is probably the best WR the national media doesn't talk about

@Cheryl: great perspective! Those guys won't even be allowed to play in the Pro Bowl so long as they've got a Super Bowl to get ready for!

@JMZ: Thanks for thr rundown! Even with all the potential turnover, I like our chances so long as Rivers is behind center.

There is no way in the world that Merriman will be re signed. McNeil is the first priority obviously, with Jackson being quickly resigned after that. English will do just fine in Merriman's place without the injuries and the off field drama. Perhaps we can convince Runyan to stay just one more year, or at least through camp, so he can mentor a third round caliber rookie Tackle, Clary is not the answer in the long run and I don't see AJ shelling out the big bucks on free agency. If you search your memories back to the starter BEFORE Clary, you'll find that he was a 7th round pick, Shane Olivea. I dunno why we let him go but that goes to show can you can find a diamond just about anywhere in the draft at Tackle.
