Cam Thomas

The Chargers finally draft a defensive tackle prospect, trading up and selecting Cam Thomas with the 146th overall selection. To move up, the Chargers sent the 159th pick and an additional 5th round pick in 2011 to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Finally. Overview report didnt sound too good though:

"A two year starter for the Tar Heels, Thomas primarily was a run stopper in the Carolina defense. He has a huge body but lacks great quickness, lateral agility and speed. He rarely makes a play out of the tackle box and appears to lack conditioning throughout the contest. He isn't an explosive player but is tough to get movement on when defending the run. He lacks an expanded pass-rush package and only flashes the ability to push the pocket when bull rushing. He is an inconsistent reactor as blocking schemes unfold and needs to improve in this phase of the game. Thomas is clearly a two-down player who could be limited as a nose tackle at the next level, but players with his size and strength are hard to find."

But it's a big need that they filled!

I love this pick. Cam is gonna become a great NT for us.

Seems likewe filled our need. I would love to see Jonathan Dwyer RB @169
I think it would solidify our running game. Maybe a TE but I know they want to get a 3rd string QB.

FINALLY! Today has been a great draft day, two really good steals so far with Stuckey and Thomas. IN AJ WE TRUST!

Loving the Stuckey/ CThomas picks after a boring first 4 rounds. All the experts seem to think these guys should have gone higher, but the experts have been dead on wrong where just about everyone past #5 should have gone, so we'll see. I'm feeling a LOT better about our draft after today, though.

The Chagers are stupid with this picks. AJ is an idiot

Nice Pick with Thomas! Huge value pick who everyone thought was gonna go in the 2nd to 3rd round! Could have gotten Myron Rolle at safety but I am happy with the Stuckey pick!

I don't get any of this. Why does AJ fall in love with guyssd that only he could love, panic and think somebody else loves them, trade up and overpay for them - Hester, Weddle. They're both ok, but there are 20-30 guys drafted behind them that are having better careers. How may UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS will we have next year? With the way AJ has treated most of these guys - Gates in particular - I can't see them taking much less than they're worth, and the only time the Spanoses have ponied up is for their 3rd down back. Why are we trading away potential depth in draft picks. I am really disappointed in this draft

AJ hand one good draft (maybe tw0) and that was his first year( maybe his second)in SD. His other drafts are just as bad this one. SOme much for his GREAT footbal mind. The needs were on defense and what doe his get - players that will probably will not start in the next two years if they are lucky.

Aj really disappointed in the way you handeled overall draft. We were sitting pretty at 28, and 40 and you blew it not to mention getting rid a proven Tim Dobbins. So many needs and you schemed you way into overpaying for a few selected maybes. Before draft Pierre Thomas was available. All good NT were still on the board after 28th and 40 rounds quick fucking around old man.

Don't be disappointed Chargers fans, I think this was a good draft...we moved up to get the players we wanted.
Matthews will add a whole new dimesion to Norv's offense, we got a strong inside LB with Butler, and we absolutely STOLE Cam Thomas (remember most draftniks had him early 2nd round). Add to that we got the 3rd-4th best safety in the draft with Stuckey...looking at his highlights, I think he could be a badass.
I was kinda bummed early on, but I think AJ worked his magic in the later rounds... what do you think?

cam thomas played right next to 4 potential first round picks next year by the way. so he may have the manny lawson syndrome, hopefully not. but SF has started turning everything around by not drafting need but drafting who is the best reguardless, the packers do this and the bengals have been doing this as well, and just in the last 3 draft with that philosophy they have really upgraded from where they were. and i can not say i believe this but stuckey is rated the 13th best safety in this draft according to pro football weekly. however i do think that eric berry, earl thomas, chad jones, reshad jones, nate allen, mays, morgan burnett, robert johnson and major wright are all better then stuckey, however he is an upgrade. and the only trade with draft picks that was not terrible was the one with eric weddle, he caught the game winning int his rookie year against the colts in playoffs to advance vs the pats, he also has lead the team in tackles his second year and he is always around the ball not to mention the fact that has him rated as the #1 fantasy db because of all of his tackles and assists and BP's not to mention they also have him rated the 9th best safety in the whole NFL on the scouting section so considering there are over 60 starting safties in the league and he is 9th at this age, give me abreak and actually go back and watch him run stirde by stride with cro on some of those ints and fumble recoveries.......almost as ridiculous as drafting buster davis instead of anthony gonzalez

You have to look at the bigger picture.
We gave up a #2 to get Mathews. Everyone was pissed off because they wanted a DT and a running back in the #1 and #2 slots. Most were mad that we did not take Cam Thomas in the second. Since we got him in the 5th, you have to see us moving up in the 1st as only losing a 5th round pick. Somehow, we still got our guy. Ask yourself this, would you have given up a 5th round pick to move up in the 1st round? Of course you would. That is the net effect of what just happened. Most people wanted Mathews and Cam as #1/#2 and that is what we got! We got lucky, but it still worked out.

you make a great point with in a way we only lost a 5th this year even though we still lost one last year but my main prob is, that if we can get some of cam thomas ability in the fifth, then we could have used our second rounder which was a great second round pick on someone like a carlos dunlap or a brian price who had 24 1/2 TFL's 10 sacks and hes almost 6'2 and weighs 325 and runs under a 5 flat forty. I enjoy boards like this because everyone has there own way of how they would run the draft. im the kind of person if i was calling the shots i would almost always draft defense and o-line with my first round draft picks and probably a lot of my second rounders unless u know the LT or rivers is right there for you caus most of the time skill players in the first and second round our a 50-50 chance of bust.

So much for football gurus...

Lest we ever forget... The Chargers traded away this last Super Bowl's MVP! I LOVE Phillip Rivers but, we have not won a super bowl with Phillip and the Saints are in firm possession of their Lombardi trophy.

We kept a dinged up LT and traded away a power back like Michael Turner. Hopefully, Mathews is the guy who can get us the 2-3 yards when we need it and... maybe occasionally get a bigger chunk of yardage...

AND... I hope that we have firmed up our defense against the run... It has been embarrassing for the last years to see third rate teams run through our defense like a hot knife through butter.

Alot of you guys sound down after this draft. I for the life of me can't think of why. I would call this AJ's best draft we got the second overall rated RB that we desperately needed and the second/third overall best DT/NT. Do you guys forget we were 13-3 with an 11 games win streak with a busted down old RB and a passive run D, now we've addressed those needs how can we not be headed for Dallas in Feb?

I'm very, very happy with this draft, and this pick was the best of all.

Cam Thomas has the two things you can't coach: he's a competitor and has great specimen value. If he wants to excel in the NFL, professional coaching will turn him into a monster in a few years. He's limited in terms of what he does, but it happens to be the one thing the Chargers don't have. If Thomas lives up to his potential, this defense will be much-improved, either down the stretch this year as he works his way up, or next year maybe.

But the rest of it wasn't bad, either. Mathews will be a beast if he can stay on the field. For what AJ paid, he better be, but they got a decent bargain on the pick, who is as reliable as his health will permit (fingers crossed). Losing Dobbins is okay, as Dobbins, Siler, Burnett and Cooper are all FA next year and they had to trade one. They had to draft his replacement, but they got a good guy. Butler looks like a player. Similarly, it's hard to criticize the Stuckey pick: the guy looks like a starter. Crompton and Epps are fair; we needed a blocking TE who can contribute immediately and a project QB with the physical tools who's not too expensive.
