Donald Butler

The San Diego Chargers trade up in the third round to select Linebacker Donald Butler from the University of Washington

In exchange for the 79th overall pick, the Chargers traded the Arizona Cardinals the 91st overall pick, the 173rd pick (6th round) and a 4th round pick in 2011

Donald Butler is a thickly built linebacker who seems ideally suited to the 3-4 defense. Strong and athletic, Butler will compete to fortify the middle of the Chargers defense.

I was looking for us to take a LB. I thought it would be Jamar Chaney (ILB) or Daniel Teo Nesheim (OLB). I'm glad we kept our 91st pick so we can get another defensive player.

WHY are the chargers ALWAYS wasting picks and reching on guys we know will still be there... so frustrating.

A nice pick- Donald Butler might have gone a lot higher if he played on a good team. The strongest linebacker in the draft (35 reps, only 3 players in the entire draft had more reps), and should make an excellent replacement/compliment to Stephen Cooper and Kevin Burnett- this player will also be a good goal-line compliment to Brandon Siler. A nice player who will be a great contributor to special teams and on specific packages his rookie year.

thats a good pick.. he is a solid linebacker.. i can guarantee u he will help solidify a weak run defense.. strong kid.. 35 reps.. thats beastly.. plus, the way the draft is going we can get everson griffin in the 4th round.. thats value.. and there is also gonna be plenty of solid players going undrafted that we can get.. this draft is as deep as ever.. we'll be just fine.

CB or OLB is next unless Cam Thomas or Bruce Campbell fall to us

Now is Cam Thomas be there in the 4th? We need to get a DL player. Thomas can play the DT, plus plug up the goalline when need be. Or we are happy with the DL and pick Myron Rolle CB?

Ryan Mathews will be better over time than Spiller becuase heis an inside runner and can break tackles. Brandon Siler and Donald Butler should both start on the inside--not Cooper nor Burnett--who just aren't physical enough. Two good DT's might yet be available. Another excellent job by AJ--which is why we have been competitive since he has been here.

we need DL, specifically Cam Thomas at NT, and then S.

Do we see a consistent trend here? We keep over-paying for players...it's obvious other teams know this with our GM being bluffed into giving up too much for not enough value/How the heck can Butler be worth moving up a couple of notches while giving up a 6th round pick and a 4th round pick in 2011? Contrast our moves to New England which already has an extra four picks in 2011 in round 1 and round 2. We have gone two days and made two picks. By the way, the Vikings took the running back in the 2nd round that our GM had no idea of...and to quote draft evaluations...giving them the most powerful 1-2 running punch in the NFL. TWO PICKS...we give up a solid player, a 2nd round pick (used to pick Golden Tate/WR) and now two more picks. I guess we don't need players...what about a NT or a CB?

I wouldn't mind trading 1 of next years 3's for cam thomas then hope Bruce Cambell falls 2 us with the pick we got from Miami. Would be 2 nice pickups.

You guys that worry about trading picks to move up need to keep one thing in mind....there can be only 53 guys on the roster! This team will only keep about four rookies on the active roster...and a few more on the practice squad.....what value is there in using seven picks if only four make the team? A.J. is moving up to make sure he gets the guys he wants....guys he feel WILL make the team and make the team better. I love the BUTLER pick. NOW, if he can get CAM THOMAS (NT) or Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (CB) and maybe another right tackle...I'll be content

I dont think they Reached on this pick! He is gona be a good physical player who is gonna be much better then Tim Dobbins ever was! Cam Thomas and Bruce Cambell not to mention Everson Griffen are all available and would all be good picks at this point in the fourth round!!

isaac said... Apr 24, 2010, 7:22:00 AM

my guess is 1 of 5

1.) Kam Chancellor
2.) Bruce Cambell
3.)Aaron Hernandez
4.)Cam thomas
5.) Jonathan Dwyer

Is butler going to be the enforcer we desperatly need? A poor man's ray lewis?

i am absolutely disgusted. We gave away a solid young back qb so we could get terrence cody at 40, and if we did not take him there this was the deepest draft i have ever seen. Of all the years to have a second round pick....just by chance we decided to hold off on cam thomas (like we did) and we took Brian Price 20 years old has 24 tackles for loss and 7 sacks as a defensive tackle that is 6'1 1/2 and weighs 320 and he also runs under a 5 flat 40 at that size. Mike mayock and mel kiper said that price would be the perfect fit for the chargers as a d end. in stead we shot our selves in the foot. cam thomas, price, would be a duo to team up with castillo. i like matthews and butler, however i do not think we would have to gave up so much in such a deep draft and then start off short next season and if you do not think that they reached butler is considered to be a better 4-3 backer because he can not stack and shed consistently and he does not use a strong punch on blockers. we need to take BPA last year i honesly though it was malauaga, i was wrong he did finish leading the team in tackles although he got hurt and had a probowl season but clay matthews blows english out of the water unfortunately. i wish that how we went about our draft today in the 5th and beyond , eric norwood navarro bowman, willie young, greg hardy and o'brian schofield were availible. and schofield had 24.5 TFL's and 12 sacks. much much better then butler(although i hope butler proves me wrong) we could have also picked up perish cox in the 6th. but at least we have hester to save the day, we only gave a second round pick up for him and it just happend to could have been deshaun jackson or even lamar woodley but at least we have a slow non blocking small FB for it. If we do not sign Adam utulski from texas he was there LT for 3 years but would prob move inside in the NFL and if we do not sign cirion black who started LT for LSU for 4 years as well because they went undrafted but were supposed to be mid round picks i will feel like this was a bronco draft

i just hope when we play the ravens in the playoffs this year, that aj remembers haloti ngata who weighs 346 and is 6'4 is so quick and such a freak he plays DE not NT but now that we gave them Terrence Cody who weights 356 and is a little taller then 6'5 and then having kelly gregg who is also 330 spell him when he needs a rest oh and by the way gregg is also a probowler. and thats just 2 of the front three we have to deal with. trevor pryce is getting much older so i do not worry about him but rey lewis still is great for 110 tackles a year and paul kruger has a ton of potential and obviously we all know what sergio kindle could be, but at least baltimore drafted 3 more extremely good weapons for flacco this week as well, in pitta, dickson, and david reed, i realize that pitta and dickson are both TE's but one runs a 4.6 and is 6'5 and 260 and the other runs a 4.55 and is 6'4 and weighs 240 to go along with stallworth, boldin and ray rice. But hey thats where drafting the best player where your drafting and not for need comes in handy...thanks AJ im entering my prime and am a semester away from graduating from school, thank you for showing me how to make money by helping out your "competitor" or friend or what ever you call your odd relationship with the real winners

This mothertrucker better be a good choice. I am tired of watching teams like The JETS coming from behind with a crazy good defense. Our offense is good but COME ON D!!!
