Ryan Mathews

The San Diego Chargers trade with the Miami Dolphins and move up to the 12th overall pick to select Ryan Mathews

To move up 16 spots in the first round, the Chargers gave up their 28th pick, the number 40 pick, their 4th round pick, as well as ILB Tim Dobbins.

Whiskeypete said... Apr 22, 2010, 5:54:00 PM

wanted R matthews, but AJ just paid a very steep price for him. thought for sure that trade was going to be for d williams. think AJ should have gone NT, before RB with that pick. only time will tell

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:03:00 PM

A.j did a good job. Little steep but there must be big difference between him and the rest. I thought D. Williams NT was the one. But hey it's not over yet. Lets see what magic A.J can do. Maybe Sproles or Merriman are on the trading block'

Jason said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:03:00 PM

I don't get this at all...Matthews must be something special because we had 2 picks right in a row...now I hope we strike gold later on.

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:04:00 PM

That was a horrible trade by AJ. He may have fallen down to 28... Stupid!!! I would understand if it was for a franchise NT, but for a RB? Overpaid!!!

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:07:00 PM

Love Matthews, but we gave up way too much when we still have serious Defensive issues!

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:10:00 PM

The 28th, 40th, 4th round pick and ILB Tim Dobbins??? Hey AJ... What are you going to do about the defensive needs now??? You know, a starting NT, DBs... and oh yeah, a ILB...

I know... you are going to strike gold with a free agent rookie... I guess rebuilding depth thru the draft isn't really important... Looks like the Chargers will be in rebuilding mode within the next two years... Great...

whiskeypete said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:10:00 PM

serious D issues...not to mention a lack of depth on the OL. with what he gave up he will now have to trade someone, or mortgage future picks(next year) to get back on the board to fill the D and OL needs. im not liking what im seeing at this point to be honest

AJ has to be sure that matthews is so good that you cant risk waiting for him and can even sacrifice a solid selection at 40

we will see. i thought dan williams or even brian bulaga. our right side of the line needs help

ED said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:22:00 PM

I'am pretty sure that he would not have dropped to 28th. Only one QB was picked so far. There goes all the mock drafts out the door. Mathews must be head & shoulder over the rest. Dobbins was traded because he wasn't worth paying big money next year when his contract is up. Our defense did take us to the playoffs last year without Williams at DT. But with Mathews the defenses will have to slow there pass rush down. Now we have a balance attack. We have threats at rushing & passing. Not since Fouts days have we a chance to attack teams in awsome way.

Calgary Chargers Fan said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:24:00 PM

I know, we all wanted a big NT but A.J is smart. Lets just be happy we have a running back that can break a tackle and give us an offense that isn't so 1 dimensional.

whiskeypete said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:26:00 PM

bolts arent balanced. they havent run the ball in two years. when norv changed the emphasis to pass from run, the ability to run the ball went out the window. matthews still has the same line in front of him that LT had for the last two years. newer back, but the results will be similar. AJ got the back most of us wanted, but now has no picks to re-tool the OL and fill the needs on D

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:36:00 PM

That's a whole lot to give up for a possibility of having a good runner we aren't likely to properly utilize any. Do we have any picks left?

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 6:44:00 PM

just along for the ride since I don't know these picks; one thing for sure running game has not been there in the Chargers' lineup when they needed it two years ago, they waited too long to give Thomlinson (sic) the goodbye kiss; when he tore his inguinal thing they should have never tried for rehab on him; but he was a fan favorite in San Diego and I wouldn't have had to live with that one. Unless the Chargers win there will be no stadium built for them with public funds.

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:22:00 PM

We wouldn't have had to give up as much if we let Mathews drop a little more (before the Texans at #20) and we gave up WAY too much for just a RB. We are a passing team, RBs are a dime a dozen and any RB can do well behind a good OL (which we don't have on the right side). Here's what we have left:

3rd (91) - NT/DE
MIA 4th (110) - RT
5th (159) - ILB/CB
MIA 6th (173) - RB

However, if we use Sproles or Merriman to trade for picks, we'd be back in the game.

Jeff Williams said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:23:00 PM

I think aj jumped the gun on a position that will be secondary to rivers and the pass. I was excited about the trade because we had Dan Williams in the bag, then surprise! Now I wonder why Williams dropped.

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:25:00 PM

Good move by the chargers Rivers/Matthews Combo could be deadly. Chargers also look like their changing to a base 4-3 Defense in the future. if that is the case then the trade makes perfect sense

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:26:00 PM

AJ Smith is an idiot. The reason the Chargers have not been able to run is the offensive line. He had some great picks a few years ago but everything lately has been terrible and overpriced

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:26:00 PM

It seemed everyone gave a thumb not so so great with the trade and picked Ryan Matthews for AJ Smith. What happened to Jacob Hester? He hasn't panned out, so it was a waste picked especially for getting him Bolts had to give up draft pick.

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:30:00 PM

I agree - with the way we've been addressing our Defense (or not addressing it), we SHOULD switch back to a 4-3 especially since a bunch of other NFL teams are jumping on the 3-4 bandwagon and sucking up all the good NTs.

Anonymous said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:36:00 PM

this is a good decision by AJ, i mean have you seen how physical, elusive and fast he is, he wouldnt been taken by 15.

and this decision mabye mean that vaughn martin is ready to make an impact...

Craig C. Rowe said... Apr 22, 2010, 7:58:00 PM

The O line isn't that bad folks ... pass protection was solid. I fault play calling more than anything, as LT couldn't run between the tackles any more. Mathews will be able to do that. D is certainly a concern but I think it can get hashed out with trade options and free agency.

david naetzel said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:12:00 PM

i agree with alot of people on this board we paid a pretty steep price, but i still have faith.now we need all defensive picks

Mark said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:20:00 PM

AJ better be on the phone with Jamal Williams to bring him back at NT. At least for 1 or maybe two years. He still has gas in the tank. Who the hell are we going to draft now that Miami took us to the cleaners??!! That fat-ass Parcel is going to die of laughter at the steal of a trade he made with AJ.

Chris said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:26:00 PM

we did sell the farm to get him, and i'd be lying if i said i wasnt upset because i am. Trading up to miami's spot i was sure there was no way Dan Williams wasnt going to be picked. Ryan Mathews sure as hell better crank out an easy 1000+ season, or this will be our worst draft in years. Thats all i can really say. Smith needs to get his head out of his ass and trade back into the 2nd round and get Mount Cody, Linval Joseph, or Cam Thomas(who is a poor man's Dan Williams) thats the only way i can justify this 1st round pick. It looks to me by all the comments everyone agrees!

Russ said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:31:00 PM

Well let's see what else AJ has planned before we all grab the pitchforks and torches and converge on Charger Park. We need a back that can go between the tackles and eat up the clock. Sproles is not that back. Yeah we need a nose tackle to stop that running game. If there is a trade that'll bring us that run stopper then AJ is a genius. If not maybe he goes to free agency. If we get rolled in the playoffs by a running team, it'll be Norv and AJ's necks on the block. But let's see what he has in store for us first.

Mark said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:34:00 PM

on a funnier note, there goes all hope of LT getting his jersey retired by the Chargers. RYAN MATTHEWS IS GOING TO ERASE ALL OF LT'S RECORDS!! And how ironic that LT is Matthew's hero?

Russ said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:46:00 PM

Mark, if he erases all of LT's records then AJ is a genius and the cost for him is well worth it.

rickeysays said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:48:00 PM

It amazes me how many serious fans, who bother to comment here, are also idiots. Yeah we gave up a lot, but there was only one Matthews in this draft, AJ recognized it, and he paid a steep price to make sure he got him. As for our d-line, we have plenty of bodies there, so it only made sense to add there if we were adding to the top of the depth chart. The fact that Williams fell to 26 tells you he would have been just another guy. But there's no way we go 4-3 when we have a bunch of average guys on the D-line. You put your best players on the field. Were a 3-4 team. As for the offense, we've gone away from the running game because LT has been ineffective. I guarantee you if Matthews re-vitalizes the running game, you're going to see more effective running.

Mark said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:53:00 PM

yeah, I'm hoping Russ.

an under the radar guy whom we could use is Brian Price out of UCLA. If we can somehow trade to get him, I think he is even better than Dan Williams. And, AJ may have done the right thing to trade up (but he just gave up too much) becuase the Cardinals drafted Dan Williams at #26.

Ed said... Apr 22, 2010, 8:57:00 PM

I can't believe all this negative talk! Are you guys really die hard Charger fans or a bunch wannabe Charger fan. Hey Mathews lead the nation in rushing. Great RBs are not a dime a dozen. Do you want to settle for an average RB, or do you want the best every down RB? When Klien owned the Chargers they traded down because he didn't want to spend the money for the best players. Now with Spanos as owners we been blessed. Money is not an object, impact players are hard to find. Believe me Mathews will be worth it.

Mark said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:00:00 PM

BTW- I was SHOCKED that Jacsonville drafted Tyson Alualu at #10.
And of course, the joke of the day is the Broncos drafting Tebow.

Josh McDaniels is single-handedly ruining that football team.
Carry on, Josh (LOL)- who you gonna run out of town next, Pat Bolen??!! You're doing a great job.

Jim said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:00:00 PM

Yes, we gave up a lot for Matthews. But, I believe there is more to come in this draft via trades. I will withold judgement until the draft is concluded. Let's all hope for the best. A Charger fan in Minnesota.

Shane said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:04:00 PM

At first I admit I was mind boggled and somewhat upset. But if we look back at our playoff loss to the Jets, our D stuffed them most of the game. It was our run game that was totally ineffective. If AJ believes Mathews can get us over the hump then why not get him. Only time will tell but I do believe this pick will turn out alright for us.

Mark said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:04:00 PM

yep, more trades to come. Merriman is on the block. I bet he's sweating like a whore in church.

Ed said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:09:00 PM

One more thing, he Chargers are not going to L.A.!! Why do you think the Rams & Raiders left. The new Stadium will be built in Downtown. That multi-purpose, soft top stadium is a great idea. It will help develope Downtown,Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights by investors jumping at the chance to build condos, restaurants, grocery stores..etc. Thus opening new jobs in San Diego. Man you negative people are such losers, you can't see the overall picture.

SteveC said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:09:00 PM

Ed and Rickey, I hope you are right, but I have to say AJ is over-rated in his abilities as a GM. This pick looks too much like Weddle, who is a nice player with good football instincts, but not fast enough or big enough to justify all the picks AJ gave up to get him and without a doubt, AJ just gave up far to much for a RB. We could have picked Javid Best as Detroit did at 30...in fact, we could have traded DOWN and still picked up a good RB and ended up with another pick in round 2 or 3. Instead we gave away far too much to get a running back. Contrast that with the Cowboys who picked up the #1 Wide Receiver and a top-5 rated pick in the draft by trading their pick with New England for a 4th round pick! Instead we jump up to 12 for this back...rated far behind Spiller? Look, he is a solid RB, but he has questionable receiving and blocking skills and less speed than several backs we could have had with no trade...including BEST. Here is a little insight on AJ, Charger insiders said as recently as two months ago AJ didn't even know who Toby Gerhart was? What? The Charger GM didn't know the Stanford player who singlehandedly beat USC and finished 2nd in the Heisman? We desperately need a NT. We are short at CB and linebacker? Yes we need running back but we gave up a starting linebacker, a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick for a running back. FYI, all the experts have said this draft is estimated to have as its strength players in rounds 2-4 (I heard fact discussed again by Belichick and another former Hall of Fame GM on ESPN radio today)...but after this trade, giving up a high 2nd round and our 4th round pick, we only have have ONE THIRD ROUND PICK LEFT! In my opinion, AJ is living off old PR and the Chargers will suffer for it. He is stubborn, rules with an iron fist and listens just to himself, and he is not getting value or depth for his trades.

manuel said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:23:00 PM

relax everybody.. chargers will move back into the 2nd round or early in the 3rd.. he did give up a little too much.. but look at all the trade ups at the bottom of the 1st round.. u never know if lions would have moved up in fromt of him to get him.. even texans could have grabbed him.. seattle as well if spiller was off the board.. never know.. but next year we have all these picks that might not even make the team since we are already a champion caliber team.. we'll get back in for some more picks.. bye bye merriman tho, maybe.. and u never know, aj could have tried other teams right before texans but they didnt want nothing of it.. i dont see sproles going anywhere since we need him to do some mentoring on mathews.. but mathews will be good for us.. perfect fit.. excellent character.. strong work ethic.. and he wont bad talk us if we trade or let him go.. (LT) ..the only problem with mathews is he has been hurt in each season in college.. durability may be a question mark.. oh and chargers will never get cody.. EVER.!

We have 9 D-Line men on the roster. 1 running back. Who ever said we should take a 10th D-Line man and still be left with only 1 running back no's nothing about building a team. The Chargers where in no mans land with the 28th and 40th pick. Who ever is availible at 91 when the chargers pick next would have problibly been there at 40. Good pick for the chargers.

whiskeypete said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:25:00 PM

its all speculation if it was right or wrong. in 3-years time will tell the story. at the same time we will find out if the OL can indeed still open holes for the run game. or was it LT. this has turned into the chicken/egg question....which comes first? was the issue with the run game due to LT losing a step, or the OL lost the ability to run block and dominate the game like in years past.

i think the frustration comes from the fact that there are 3-6 very effective RBs in the draft class. compared to 3 NTs. some of the other DLs were being mentioned as possible NTs but they wouldnt be playing a straight up 0-technique. the draft experts had some of these guys (odrick, price and a few others i cant recall), slotted as possible NTs but playing anywhere from the 1 to 3 gaps. makes it tough to have a NT that's lined up over a guard in the 3-technique. i think most of us prayed for d williams, who has been the consensus #1 NT in the draft and it didn't happen. with the trade we thought AJ was pulling the trigger for him.

as bad we need a RB i think the NT position is the bigger concern. the D is built on the 3-4 and a 3-4 D hinges entirely on the NT. not having a great, or even very good NT truly weakens the units ability to outscheme an opponent. a 3-4 NT is there for two reasons. 1-cause a double team everytime, 2-jam the middle. if #1 is happening then the defense has essentially 2 more players on the field. one (typically ILB) can shadow the QB and the second player can be used to support the run/pass defense, however they want to use him. think polamalu...that is why he does what he does. hampton at NT creates that mismatch, that allows polamalu the room to freelance and make plays.

anyways enought for now...time for bed

SteveC said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:37:00 PM

Whiskey Pete has said it very well...several effective RB's, three effective NT's...we gave up on Jamal Williams because he could not stay on the field the past two years...and that had a very negative effect on our run D.

Jeff Williams said... Apr 22, 2010, 9:38:00 PM

We have 9 D-linemen: one named Luis Castillo, another with some raw talent and lot's of question marks, and 7 other 3rd-4th stringers who are filling space because we can't find anything better. We didn't pay Rivers $100 million to become a running team. Matthers will be a great RB who is going to be playing in a lot of high-scoring, too close for comfort games because of a sucky Defense. Fix the defense and Rivers could win games with Betty White behind him in the backfield.

That was a great pick up. Ryan Matthews is going to be special in the NFL watch. What I would do is package our 2nd and 3rd round pick for next year and move up to the top of the 2nd round this year. If that does not work I would trade spoles and maybe my 3rd round next years pick. We are paying spoles way too much, not cool. One of those would get us to the top of the 2 round.

2.) Taylor Mays that would be a great pick
3.) Cam Thomas or Geno Atkins one of those will be in the 3rd
4.) package a trade and get Marshawn Lynch two dominating RB.
The rest would be the best on the board at that time.

We do need someone we can rely on in the backfield but we also need a nose guard badly. If we cant stop the other team on the line its game over. We also need a kicker that can make a fieldgoal against the jets. Maybe we should trade a bunch of them to the jets because they played like they were on the jets team the last time they got together.

I. Think A.j is gonna ma some serious moves in the 2nd and 3rd rds.
I think 2-3 trades could/need to be made.

1.) 1st rd (pk 2011)=#39 pk(raiders they don't have a 1 in 2011)

2.) Shaun Phillips+3 rd or 4th rd (2011)=#56(packers)

#39(T-raiders)-Taylor Mays
#56(T-packers)- Cam Thomas

Camo17 said... Apr 23, 2010, 2:13:00 AM

You guys are MORONS! Do you even know what they gave up? A second round pick and Dobbins who they only signed the other day for this exact move! They are swapping Miami's 4th rounder which is moving us up 16 spots and they got there 6th round pick as well! There was no other Ryan Mathews in this draft, trust me. AJ will trade up tomorrow and get one of the 2 nice NT's left or one of the very nice DT's left. He may ship Sproles, since he does not want to be here and Mathews is a LEGIT every down back that does everything we could dream of in our Offense...

Camo17 said... Apr 23, 2010, 2:46:00 AM

Also reports are Seattle was taking Mathews at 14, if that didn't go down then Houston was praying for him at 20! I said two NT's above, there is actually at least 3 very nice NT's and many stud DT's/DE's left and I think were gonna go get one!

Anonymous said... Apr 23, 2010, 3:55:00 AM

Most people do not get it because we are not GM'S or talent evaluators. I think it was a good move. We unloaded some prima-donnas, and has-beens this off-season that were dead weight!

Who knows what AJ will do tomorrow but, I am sure he is very aware of the teams immediate needs and we may see more surprising moves in the draft.

We went 13-3 last year with a mediocre defense and made the play-offs only to have to rely on our kicker who chokes in the play-offs.

My thoughts are if we are such a grat offense then we should put up alot of points in the first half and rely on a workhorse running back to wear down the other team's defense in the second half.

Yes, LT was a good running back but, he could not get it done in the play-offs (Norv probably knew something we didn't in the play-offs as to why he did not put LT in.)

Welcome Ryan Matthews, Get us the win that LT failed to do.

TJ said... Apr 23, 2010, 5:16:00 AM

For anyone criticizing this move now, prepare to eat your words. Did we pay too much to get Mathews? Perhaps. But it will pay off in the long run. This kid is going to be something special RIGHT away! Yes, we still need help stopping the run. But AJ knows that and SHOULD do something about it on day 2. DT is also a lot deeper than top shelf RBs in the draft EVERY year so if we don't get someone who can do the job right away this year, we can use our 1st rounder on someone who can next year because RB won't be a position of need for the next 10 years with Mathews. Love the pick...I'll be first in line to get my Mathews jersey whenever he picks his number!!!

Anonymous said... Apr 23, 2010, 5:26:00 AM

I can understand moving and giving the picks but giving up Dobbins was a big mistake. AJ overpaid for this selection because of his cowardness to get into the free agent market. Even with the pick at RB we are very slim on talent at the tailback spot. Those defenses will be on their heals all year. I will be shocked if we will see 8 in the box at all this year that was such a custom for SD to face with LT and sproles.

Mark said... Apr 23, 2010, 7:05:00 AM

how bout' the 500 lb. gorilla that is still in the room- Nate Kaeding? I wonder if there will be any decent kickers available in the later rounds? We need to make a trade to get rid of him if we ever want to succeed in close playoff games.

Anonymous said... Apr 23, 2010, 8:21:00 AM

I gotta admit that I was absolutely blow away when they selected Mathews instead of D. Williams. There's two ways of looking at it...either something about Williams is way overrated or there are some underlying issues that The Chargers noticed with him, or Ryan Mathews is one of those rb's that comes around every decade or so. After sleeping on it, I'm beginning to think the latter. I hope that we get back into the second round but, if not, we'll see who's around in the 3rd. We're going to need to look at dt, ilb, s, and possibly cb. the whole Dt thing intrigues me, though. We have so many defensive lineman atm. I get the feeling that this year may not yield any new ones. They may like what they think Nwagbho and Martin are going to bring as well as Bingham being healthy. This should be interesting however the rest of the draft unfolds for us.

can people use their name, cuz its hard giving props to anonymous.. haha.. but he put exactly how i was thinking.. chargers went 13-3 with the defense we already had.. with the first 3 losses coming while we were trying to recover from jamal williams going down.. we needed a top notch RB.. even as a passing team, we still ran the ball 40-45 percent of the time.. LT just wasnt getting it done.. chargers will move back up in the draft.. maybe not NT but DE.. they still like vaughn martin and owaghboo and the rotation they have.. but cesaire is older and hasnt proved to be getting any better.. i see merriman being traded and i wouldnt mind.. english looks promising and has a strong work ethic (something AJ loves) and seems ready to start.. dont see sproles going cuz he is gonna mentor mathews and we need his change of pace presence and he is our returner.. just relax everybody.. we are not GMs and AJ is.. he knows what he's doing and its only the 1st pick so far.. every year chargers are favorite to make the super bowl.. getting drafting at #40 or not isnt gonna change that.. aj will prove all his doubters wrong.. the only thing aj is bad at is drafting WRs in the 1st round.. haha.. he is a great GM.. and he will not let us down.. trust.

You people are so negative. For all you know there could have been multiple teams calling to take Mathews and he was the guy we needed at runningback. For all I know there is still today and tomorrow and I guarantee we will get a nose tackle. Just because we didn't get a nose tackle in the first round does not mean there aren't any out there that will be great for our defense.

I've been reading all the comments this morning and everyone seems to be upset because the chargers "gave up too much". Well, all you need to know right now is a really explosive offensive team just got better. We won't be picking above #15 in the first round for another 5 years because of this one pick. Let's see how the rest of the draft pans out. Peace.

We gave up a ton to get Mathews and I hope that he is worth it. I'm not sure that we should have given that much for him. AJ has way to pull diamonds out of the later rounds. I'm hoping that he has his eye on a NT that will surprise all of the pundits...someone who has been able to avoid all of the hype...or, perhaps another trade. Should be good linemen left in later rounds of this draft.

I am praying to God that we can get Brian Price from UCLA. The only reson he is still available is that teams don't think he has the size- he's 6'1" and 300lbs.
But if you the highlight clips from last year's UCLA/Tennessee game, the difference in that game was Brian Price. He had multiple sacks and tackles behind the line for losses. After that, he OWNED Jonathan Crompton and Hardesty.

.......and further to my previous post, what did Dan Williams do in that UCLA/Tennessee game??? NOTHING!!!

Brian Price is the answer

even if we gave up to much,we needed this rb. he's like a combo of LT and sproles put together. sproles will prob be gone next yr.
also bingham is back and we have some good players at nt. dont panic we are going to win the afc west again. just hope for no flags "headbutting" and make the damn feild goals in playoffs
overall this was a good pick for years to come.

"going to win the afc west again"- yeah! especially the way Josh McDaniels and the Broncos keep regressing. I think the Raiders will have a better record than them next year.

if you all knew anything about football then you would know that defenses change all of the time. we are now moving into a 4-3 defense because we have hybrid linebackers that move like CB. We already have to many DL. wasting a pick on one wouldnt have solved any issues. DL are always great in later rounds. Look at when JAMAL WILLIAMS was picked. We went up and grabbed an excellent RB that the GIANTs were wanting to pick up. AJ always finds excellent talent in that later rounds. Hester/Weddle have been great players. Weddle hits just as hard as anyone and Hester has been behind LT and Sproles. What do you expect. But when he is in he is averaging at least 4 yards per carry. Make sure you get your facts right before just blasting off at the mouth.

I was wrong, we didn't quite sell the farm. Maybe Mathews is the answer we have been looking for. My question is, is he going to stay healthy? he's been injured in 2 of his last 3 seasons at Fresno St. correct me if i'm wrong there. Missing 6-8 games in 3 seasons. now, we need to move back into the 2nd round and get a NT or SS. I think there actually might be a NT left in the 3rd round, someone in the likes of Linval Joseph, Torell Troup or HOPEFULLY Cam Thomas. Fix the defense AJ thats how you win championships!

Everybody here calling everybody else morons and idiots makes me fear that you might ALL be right, and underscores the cruel irony of the Ghandi quote, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".
Bottom line: A. J. paid WA-A-A-Y too much for Mathews, especially for a team that, despite the recent divisional successes, is rebuilding. The Chargers *need* a major influx of new and better and more stable talent, and they need it now. Mathews does indeed look very good in college highlight films, but unless the NFL (fully) legalizes offensive holding and/or our Bolts find the mystery All-Pro fullback and right side O-lineman no one recognizes yet, he’s going to start almost every run with a defender in his face BEFORE he reaches the line of scrimmage, just like L.T. did. And how sure-handed is he? Time Will Tell, but Mathews may end up being the best demonstration of just how G-R-E-A-T (yet somehow under-appreciated) LaDainian Tomlinson was by the local yokels.
Being an Olde Fart, let me make this historical reminder: Usually (you can all look it up on your computers) when GM’s start trading large amounts of relatively high draft choices away for some supposed super-child, it blows up in the franchises collective face. More often than not it’s a sign that the owner is a cheap-ass b*stard (?) and/or the GM has convinced himself that he sees what only He sees, and only he can find nirvana by exercising his massive ego on a suitably massive stage. God forbid if Mathews blows out a knee early, or Gates or Rivers does, because this franchise is now officially headed in the wrong direction, I think. But let’s see what the next few days brings.
Go Bolts!!!!

the thing about all the fans for all teams is no matter how good their teams do in the previous year, they are still gonna want an upgrade at a position with a decent player.. everyone can argue what position needs to be upgraded but none of us see how some of the players are looking in voluntary offseason workouts.. for all we know AJ is seeing improvements at the positions we think needs an uprade.. only the team knows.. the bottom line, we got 2 solid players.. matthews is the best every down back in the draft and butler is one of the best ILB.. and we only gave up 1 pick so far in this draft.. i'll give up 1 pick for 2 solid players.. but thats just me but im not a GM.. but so are none of u.. we have all the opinions in the world cuz we love our team and want them to get all the players WE think we'll help us.. every single player in the draft can help us.. whether directly or indirectly.. they can be good players or push the others in that position to be better.. its not all college stats and pro day and combine.. who thought ryan leaf was gonna be the biggest bust all time.. who thought tom brady was gonna be a 3-time super bowl MVP.. we all wished for dan williams but he could be a big bust.. we all think mathews might not be worth it but he can be a hall of famer.. we dont know.. basically, dont be quick to call AJ stupid or genius.. personally, i think its a good deal cuz we got, who i think are, 2 solid players in the first 3 rounds.. but then again, just like all of us here, i dont know for sure.. i just get annoyed at some of the people in here call aj dumb.. chargers stupid.. chargers are going backwards and not forward.. yet were in the playoffs every year and chargers are still, by some, considered favorites to win it all.. pre-draft.. i would really love to see one of us be the GM for a year.. that is not an easy job.. even some of the best GMs made bust picks.. some of the worst GMs made a great picks.. its all a mystery til our picks start playing.
