Mathews was highly-regarded by the Chargers organization as prospect entering the NFL draft. As the nation's leading rusher in college last year, and as someone who possesses excellent physical tools, the Chargers have high expectations for Mathews Mathews. He'll be the primary ball carrier and will be leaned on heavily to jump-start the team's running game. It was important to get his deal done as quickly as possible so that he may start practicing with the first-team offense and find his rhythm with the starting offensive linemen.

"Now it's official," Mathews said. "I'm part of the team and I've got to go out there and earn my paycheck now."
