Can Meachem and McClain Improve the Bolts' Offense in 2012?

The Chargers have been uncharacteristically busy this offseason, perhaps alluding to the tremendous pressure on General Manager AJ Smith get back into the playoffs. Mychal Edelman and Josh Bretow talk about the Bolts' new faces, whether or not the team has properly addressed roster holes, their excitement with the addition of Le'Ron McClain, and what Peyton Manning signing with the Broncos does to the AFC West landscape.

Triplook said... Mar 30, 2012, 7:52:00 PM

we got a fullback to open up holes for matthews---we have a slot receiver--and i think we should give curtis brinkley a shot----we have the makings of a MONSTER offense this year

Busy? are you joking? Aj is busy because he came within a hair of being fired. he's motivated to make something happen this year. unfortunately,AJ's stated "'s business as usual..", which doesn't give me confidence that things will be much different.
the definition of madness...doing the same things, over, an over again, and expecting different results.
good job Aj. good Job Norv. stay the course.....the unemployment line is dead ahead.

Arnie you are right on! I used to think AJ was the major problem because he's the one who hired and kept Norv and he's the one who has let this team go from one that was very deep in most positions to one that needs to get lucky with a OL man from the scap heap to save it's season (and his job!). Now I know the problem is Dean Spanos for not wanting or not being able to acknowledge there is a problem....sort of like an alcoholic who can't begin the healing process until he acknowledges there is a problem!

Sorry but I for one think this team is in for from real trouble now that there's more than one francise QB within the division. No longer can we rest on the fact a team like Denver is going to fold up it's tent and lose out to give us a chance at the division. AND because we never seem to be able to resign any of our players and we AGAIN are bringing in other teams cast off's I think it's going to take a while for this new group to gel and look for another slow start....which could mean doom for this team!

i see you got my hint. Dean needs to grown a pair and not be afraid to lose something, to gain something. But keep this in mind Dean lets the "football people" come up with the plan, and Dean signs off on it.
the problem with not re-signing your FA, is when you bring in new people, you will always be in a constant state of flux, and instability. whether you we liked tolbert or not. Whether we thought VJ was worth the money or not. they both brought stability to the team. the upgrade at fullback was necessary, however it's seems a little odd that 4 years later the team recognizes this, when it had a Pro-bowl FB with 2 years left on his contract. Norv ran a system in which he didn't need a FB, because he had   3 1st rounders, 2 2nd rounders and a 3rd rounder, in front of Emmit Smith. All with an average weight of 350+ and all were pro-bowlers. My point? it was easy to send a single back, "Up The Middle" with those guys in front of your RB.
Anyways, i'm still behind my team and i still hope they win it all, so i can eat a big helping of crow. But my moneys on AJ and Norv looking for work elsewhere before i eat crow. Why? ask John Fox about his chances of winning the west this year.

What I hate is anytime you try to get fans to see the big picture with this organization you're treated like something other than a true fan. I've been following and supporting this team since the 70's and always will but I'm not afraid to say why I think this next season is going to be more of the same. Can't keep doing the same things that have yielded worst and worst results year over year (last four years) and expect a miracle to happen and all the sudden we wake up Super Bowl Champs. Denver backed into the playoffs...yes they did! But they won a playoff game (something we haven't done in four years) without a francise QB. Why because they have a great defense...what wins championships? Defense! So this off season the team that won without a QB now has a quality QB. The other team (Chargers) have a good offense and even without VJ is still strong...problem is we don't have a strong defense and AJ did next to nothing to improve the areas we had problems with. CB, I guess it's more of the same in getting burned by the quality receivers of the league. How about a safetly? Even Steve Gregory is gone! How about a pass rusher? So now the talk is about picking up the missing elements in the draft...WTF! I thought it was a win this year proposition how do you do that with rookies? Just don't get it but in more ways than one I think I do...

Triplook said... Apr 2, 2012, 7:43:00 PM

hansen your are correct--our defense was awful last  year---i hope AJ doesnt F this draft  up we have to get a home run impact defensive pick--a guy that has a merriman typ of impact--if not another 8-8 year being the best team in the div sitting home watching the playoffs
