Edwin Baker

With the 250th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers have selected Edwin Baker, RB Michigan State.

SCOUTING REPORT

From NFL.com:

Baker is an early-entry junior who was a full-time starter in 2010 but only sparingly in 2011. He is a straight-line runner who had a very productive sophomore year until he was beat out by a younger back this past year. He returned kicks for Michigan State but didn't display the type of ability to contribute there in the NFL.

Analysis

Strengths
Baker is a gradual accelerator who is good to get to the second level and through trash at the line of scrimmage. He is an inside runner who has a good feel and patience for blocks to develop. He is a willing blocker who has a decent base and ability to jolt oncoming rushers.

Weaknesses
Baker's career has been on the decline ever since losing his job to a younger back at Michigan State. He has average strength and explosion and struggles to make plays on his own will. He needs a clear path to daylight to ignhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifite his above-average speed, and that hasn't happened often in the past year. He has trouble sifting through tackles at the linebacker level and is a one-speed runner most of the time. He hasn't displayed the competitiveness and will that he did in 2010 for quite some time.

c'mon. if your  so "hype" on mathews being the man, and McClaine to improve blocking an take some carries, why not use this pick to "replace" dombraski?

Super Bowl?!?!

After two straight seasons without a playoff game and four without a playoff win I'd just settle for winning the division which would be no small task given the Broncos are last year's division winners and they did that without a great QB...now they have Peyton so we can't have any stupidness like 6 straight losses or starting slow out of the gate or the season will be over before it starts for us!

Sorry to sound negative Msshay1010 but I'm just being realistic...this was a Great draft for AJ and something we can and most likely will build on...but come on we as fans have to demand more out of the team or we'll certainly see a poor product. Makes you wonder what the draft might have looked like if AJ's butt wasn't on the line....

Well... we have drafted some pretty decent backs in the past. I'm not saying this is a good pick, but maybe it's a diamond in the rough. Shoot, Tolbert wasn't even drafted, was he?

Peyton, really what did he do last year, nada. He's a crap shot, forget about what he did before, he has to prove he can still do it after taking some hits. Besides, how many games has Peyton won against the Chargers, not many, he has his biggest brake downs against the Chargers. He has problems with the 3-4, with Denver going back to the 4-3, he still won't be practicing against it. Add to that, the new DB coach Berry, was the DC in Indy, so he's been around him and more then likely knows some of his treats or has some type of insight on him.

So what you're saying is, since LT was the men and Lo was the best blocking FB in the NFL. AJ shouldn't of taken Turner in the draft. That's what your reasoning is saying.

Besides how many 5th to 7th rounders make it, hell how many 1st rounders make it in the NFL. The draft is a crap shot, it's not an exact science.

Just a little tid bit for some of you, AJ has drafted more pro-bowlers then any other GM in the NFL, since he took over that position with the Chargers. Even Belichick has drafted less pro-bowlers, then AJ. That doesn't include UDFA's that AJ has signed, that became pro-bowlers.
